Kararaina Te Ira is an accomplished heritage professional with over 14 years of experience spanning conservation, curation, and strategic leadership. As the Kaihautū and Director of Penapena Taonga, she leads a specialist consultancy dedicated to preserving and enriching cultural heritage, ensuring its resonance for present and future generations.
Kararaina’s journey into heritage began with a foundation in art history before she specialised in cultural material conservation, completing a master’s degree at the University of Melbourne with a focus on objects and textiles. Her career has included roles as a benchtop and field conservator, art and social history curator, collections curator, museum director, senior government heritage specialist, and senior executive leader in the archival sector. This breadth of experience has equipped her with a holistic understanding of the cultural heritage ecosystem.
Penapena Taonga reflects Kararaina’s deep commitment to nurturing meaningful connections between people and their taonga. The consultancy offers services in cultural material conservation, curatorial advice, bespoke art acquisition, and strategic planning, all underpinned by environmentally sustainable practices.
